Entertainment Giant and Civil Rights Activist Dies at the Age of 71
William "Bill" Cherry, a promotions icon who worked with the best artists, musicians, politicians, and comedians for the past fifty (50) years -- forcing a nation to recognize blacks and their roles in society and in the entertainment industry -- died today at his Durham, NC home. The 71-year-old entertainment icon died doing what he loved - working at his computer to promote entertainers!

"He had the ability to make people stars and not get in their
spotlights. He was a master builder," Reverend Al Sharpton
said of Bill Cherry´s promotions work. "I´ve known Mr. Cherry since I was 13-years-old. He has helped me literally all my life: he helped me with my first run for President; he got Richard Roundtree (Shaft) to do a fundraiser to get me started with my New York Bread Basket; and at that time, Shaft was the biggest thing in the world. He (Bill) believed in people and he believed in the cause of the African-Americans, said Sharpton. "Bill Cherry was a renowned man, an excellent promoter who used `show business´ to organize social justice. He realized the cause was more important than the money."

Reverend Jesse Jackson, a friend for more than forty (40)
years said Bill Cherry was a creative genius. "After Dr. King´s
assassination there were marches, riots, and a chance for
some terrible violence; but, Bill Cherry was on the other side of that. Bill Cherry used his creativity to turn the situation around and to begin building coalitions, to heal wounds and to create warmth and productivity". Reverend Jackson said Mr. Cherry´s work in the entertainment field was unmatchable. "Bill had knowledge of the industry. He worked with the Supremes, the Four Tops, Stevie Wonder, Isaac Hayes and the Barkays. He also had a working relationship not just with the artists, but with their managers and agents. And his relationships made him a superb communicator and an excellent coordinator. I thank his family for sharing him with us for so many years. He meant so much to so many of us!"

Actor Richard Roundtree (The Original Shaft) and friend of
Bill Cherry for more than thirty-five (35) years said a dear friend is gone. "I´ve had a lot of mentors from Poitier to Parks and Bill Cherry falls into that same category. He had an innate integrity where you never had to look over your shoulder, and that´s a very sacred attribute", Roundtree stated. "He was responsible for me getting into the NEC (Negro Ensemble Company). When I was trying to produce movies, he urged me to form my own company Cherrytree Productions. He introduced me to some key people in the country. He had a network of people that was life-altering for me."Jerry Roebuck - a friend for twenty (20) years and founder of Black Expo New York and Black Expo USA - said Bill quietly revolutionized the way America looked at black businesses. "Bill was on my first planning board for Black Expo. He opened up my eyes to a lot of things and a wealth of experience. He worked with Richard Pryor (as his road
manager), Kirk Franklin and Jesse Jackson. For me, he was
such a role model, friend, and elder; and he helped me realize that Black Expo should be an avenue: to provide information and education, to provide job opportunities, to showcase black excellence and achievement, and to give blacks a chance to give something back to the community. I will miss his friendship. If I never do another Black Expo or if I do Black Expo for the next twenty (20) years, I´ll miss having Bill Cherry there as my friend," Roebuck said.
Singer Howard Hewett knew Mr. Cherry for more than two
decades and said the entertainment industry has lost a mighty force. "As a promoter, I will remember Bill´s efficiency. You knew everything was going to be right and in order..." Hewett also stated that Bill Cherry was more than a business associate. "He was a good, good friend, and he was just a great guy to talk to and bounce ideas off. He will truly be missed."

Author and Pastor Carl Kenney loved having Bill Cherry as a
member ofCompassion Ministries of Durham. "Bill was the
epitome of a member. He brought a passion to the work of the church and a dedication to the people in the church that
became a model of service for those who were younger. Bill
Cherry was a father to those who needed guidance not only in
Durham, NC but around the world.

Durham Mayor Bill Bell said Bill Cherry was a trailblazer for
Durham and folks around the country. "It´s a tremendous loss. Bill Cherry ventured in an area where people dared not to go. He didn´t mind taking risks. Just recently, he had one of our people (UDI) go to Darfur, Africa; and had it not been for him, they would not be participating in this business trip.
Mr. Cherry's survivors include his wife, Diane Cherry, his
children - Kendra Cherry, Kameron Cherry, LeahWatson,
Sean Cherry, and William "Bill" Cherry Jr., and two
grandchildren. Born in Manhattan, New York, Mr. Cherry received a master´s degree in journalismfrom Columbia University. He was the vice president of Richard Pryor Enterprises and he worked with Pryor on at least six films and comedy tours. He was a publicist for the Negro Ensemble Plus On-Off Broadway Productions. Mr. Cherry co-produced the film, "Save the Children" for Operation Push. And he was the director of publicity and promotions for Campaign/Stax Records, Free Southern Theater and UniWorld Group Advertising out of Newark.

Mr. Cherry was involved in many civic, educational, and church organizations. In addition, he worked in media entertainment, marketing, video and film production and promotions. Notably, he produced a documentary for BET (Black Entertainment Television) on the life of the Honorable Louis Farrakhan. He has also produced a documentary on gospel great Kirk Franklin. He was the founder of the National Association of Black Promoters. Mr. Cherry did national marketing and publicity consulting for Columbia Pictures, Paramount Pictures, 20th Century Fox Films, United Artists Films, Bill Cosby Productions ... just to name a few.

Bill Cherryalso received a multitude of honors and awards -
too many to name, but here are a few that held sentimental
value to him. He received the Entertainment Atlanta USA
Magazine Award for his work in the entertainment industry; the North Carolina Durham Housing Authority Award for his
participation in their sit-down banquet in which Dick Gregory
was the keynote speaker; Compassion Ministries of Durham
presented him with an award for "Where are the Men Series",
a community involvement award where Mr. Cherry rallied men to get involved in their communities.

Flowers, Donations, and Well Wishes can be sent to Diane
Cherry and Family at 1810 Milan Street, Durham, NC 27704.

NC Wanted
In addition to some excellent production work, two more reasons to check out the latest "NC Wanted" link! My acting buddy Ronnie Cruz and my son Aaron are in this episode!

Here's the link: http://www.ncwanted.com/

Instructions: Go to the video player at the right of the screen, right above thehand-print where it says "Saturday May 26, NC Wanted Mystery: The Case of Beth Ellen Vinson".Click the player to load the show.

Ronnie did a fantastic job as Phu Tan Nguyen. Very effective acting on his part. His segment starts at 3:35 on the viewer.

I was very proud of my boy Aaron too. He plays the son of Robert Burkey in that segment. Notice that his hair wastemporarily colored black for the part too, ha!Also, the Burkey segment was filmed in and around our house; all of
the computer shots, the interiors and exteriors. Watch for Katy's handmade quilt on our couch, ha ha. That segment starts at5:34 on the viewer. What a fun day, with the television crews here teeming around all over (I BBQ'd
burgers for everyone that night!).

Hope you enjoy the show...the producers really do a fantastic job. If you have any comments, I can always forward any feedback on to them.
